METHODS
Formula Design: randomised controlled trial.

Formula Allocation: unconcealed.*

Formula Blinding: unblinded.*

Formula Follow up period: 1 week.

Formula Setting: Kobe, Japan.

Formula Patients: 80 patients 24–85 years of age (median 64 y, 69% women) with unilateral BPPV-PSC (54% patients with the right side affected).

Formula Intervention: self treatment at home with modified EP after 1 cycle of EP at the outpatient clinic (n = 40) or 1 cycle of EP alone (n = 40). Self treatment included illustrated instructions for the specific manoeuvre on the affected side. The head hanging position was achieved by supporting the shoulder with a pillow, and each head position was held for >30 seconds, 3 times/day, until the relief of positional vertigo for >=24 hours.

Formula Outcomes: negative Dix-Hallpike test result, complete resolution of positional vertigo (PV), combined negative Dix-Hallpike test result and complete resolution of PV, and complications.

Formula Patient follow up: 99%.
