METHODS

Formula Design: randomised controlled trial.

Formula Allocation: unclear allocation concealment.*

Formula Blinding: blinded (data collectors).*

Formula Follow up period: 12 months.

Formula Setting: 5 Veteran Affairs medical centres (VAMCs) in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, USA.

Formula Patients: 838 daily smokers (mean age 57 y, 90% men) who were willing to quit within 30 days. Participants who did not have a telephone number, had speech or hearing problems, were unwilling to receive telephone counselling, or were currently taking smoking cessation medications were excluded.

Formula Intervention: telephone care (n = 418) or standard care (n = 420). Telephone care. Participants received >=7 calls over 2 months from trained counsellors who used a relapse sensitive approach and a protocol from the California Smokers’ Helpline. Participants received counselling for up to 3 quit attempts within 12 months and were encouraged to use pharmacological therapy (eg, nicotine patch, or if unsuccessful, slow release bupropion, nicotine gum, or combination).
