METHODS
Design:
blinded comparison of the original MMSE and a short version of MMSE with neuropsychological examination.
Setting:
a centre for elder research in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Patients:
243 home dwelling elderly people {75–83 years of age (mean age 80 y, 47% men)}* who had the original MMSE screening. 28% of them screened positive {based on MMSE cut-point of 26/27}*.
Description of tests:
2 dichotomous subscales obtained from the Rasch item analysis were A-MMSE (age correlated scale) including orientation to time, attention/calculation, naming, repetition, 3 stage command; and B-MMSE (not correlated with age) including orientation to place, registration, recall, reading, and copying. A new scale model was D-MMSE consisting of all B-MMSE items with a polytomous scoring of the "3 object recall" item (see further details of D-MMSE and its instructions for administration at www.evidence-basedmedicine.com).
Diagnostic standard:
a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery including 30 subtests.
Outcomes:
sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratio
