QUESTION

Does calcium supplementation during pregnancy reduce the risk of high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, and related maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes?

REVIEW SCOPE

Selected studies compared calcium supplementation (⩾1 g/d) with placebo during pregnancy (starting at <35 wks’ gestation) for prevention of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Outcomes were high blood pressure; pre-eclampsia; maternal death or serious morbidity; haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome; preterm birth; stillbirth or neonatal death; and admission to neonatal intensive care unit.
