STUDY QUESTION

Setting:

{London, UK.}{dagger}

Patients:

104 participants >18 years of age (mean age 40 y, 66% women) who were overweight or obese (body mass index >25 kg/m2).

Intervention:

a habit-based weight-control intervention with weekly (n = 36) or monthly weighing (n = 33), or waiting list (n = 35). Participants in the weight-control groups were simply given a leaflet ("10 top tips for weight loss") that listed activity behaviours associated with negative energy balance, recommendations for eating, and advice on habit formation; and contained a daily self-monitoring checklist for planning and recording weight. Participants were encouraged to incorporate the behaviours into their daily routines. The waiting-list group was offered the intervention after 8 weeks.

Outcomes:

change in weight and quality of life (measured on the shortened Extended Satisfaction With Life Scale).
