STUDY QUESTION

Are higher fasting plasma glucose (FPG) concentrations within the normal range associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus?


STUDY DESIGN

Design:

retrospective cohort study.

Setting:

health maintenance organisation in Portland, OR, USA.

Participants:

46 578 people who were >40 years of age (mean age 58 y, 60% women) and had an FPG test result <100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/l), no previous test result >100 mg/dl, and no diagnosis of diabetes.

Risk factors:

FPG, assessed as a continuous variable and in 4 categories. Results were adjusted for potential confounding variables: cardiovascular disease, hypertension, age, sex, body mass index, smoking, blood pressure, and lipids.

Outcome:

type 2 diabetes (ICD-9th Revision–Clinical Modification diagnosis or FPG test result >125 mg/dl [6.9 mmol/l]). Mean length of follow-up was 81 months.
