Q In postmenopausal women, does a low fat diet lead to increased body weight over time?

METHODS
Design:
randomised controlled trial (Women’s Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial).
Allocation:

mean 7.5 years.
Setting:
40 clinical centres in the US.
Participants:
48 835 women who were 50–79 years of age (mean age 62 y, 81% white), were postmenopausal, and consumed a diet with fat intake of ⩾32% of daily total calories. Exclusion criteria: previous breast cancer, cancers other than non-melanoma skin cancer in past 10 years, illness with predicted survival <3 years, and impediments to adherence (eg, alcoholism).
