Does bariatric surgery reduce weight and improve type 2 diabetes in adults?

Review scope

Included studies evaluated any kind of bariatric surgery (gastric banding, gastroplasty, gastric bypass, and biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch) and reported weight loss and type 2 diabetes status. Outcomes included absolute weight, percentage of excess body weight (ie, amount above normal body weight) lost, and resolution (ie, being off medication and fasting plasma glucose [FPG] concentration <100 mg/dl) or improvement (reduced medication or FPG concentration 100–125 mg/dl) of diabetes.
