Context

Recurrence after attempted curative colorectal cancer surgery remains problematic with up to 50% developing metastases by 5 years.1 More aggressive surgical approaches likely improve prognosis,2 and there is a reasonable assumption that early detection by intensive patient follow-up improves outcomes.
