The manuscript by Kiran et al1 investigates a long contentious issue of preoperative bowel preps in colorectal surgery.
Methods
The authors used the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) 2012 database to compare patients undergoing colon or rectal surgery which received either preoperative mechanical bowel prep alone (MBP+/ABX−), MBP with oral antibiotics (MBP+ABX), or neither MBP or ABX.
