The Mediterranean diet has long been associated with lower risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, which is mainly based on results from observational studies.
The PREDIMED study was a well-designed, large-scale randomised trial of 7447 middle-aged participants from Spain with high cardiovascular risk but no CVD.
