Chronic lower extremity (LE) ulcers represent a major challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. In the USA, they affect an estimated 2.5–4.5 million people. The most common chronic LE wounds are venous leg ulcers (VLU), diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and arterial ulcers (AU).1 Since standard care (SC) heals only between 30% and 75% of VLUs and between 24% and 31% of DFUs,2 ,3 additional therapies for non-healing ulcers are needed.
