Comparison of cough reflex testing with videoendoscopy in recently extubated intensive care unit patients
2016, Journal of Critical CareCitation Excerpt :A range of theories exists regarding the cause of postextubation dysphagia, including laryngotracheal trauma, muscle atrophy, and the prior administration of neuromuscular blocking agents [19]. There is less written about the possible causes of the attenuation of the cough reflex postextubation, but possibilities include neurological adaptation [20,21] and the administration of opioids [22]. In this study, morphine-equivalent opioid dose (mg/[kg h]) in the 12 and 24 hours preceding testing did not correlate significantly with the presence or absence of cough reflex.
