Context
The Mediterranean diet has long been associated with lower risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, which is mainly based on results from observational studies.
Methods
The PREDIMED study was a well-designed, large-scale randomised trial of 7447 middle-aged participants from Spain with high cardiovascular risk but no CVD. The participants were allocated to three groups: a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extravirgin olive oil (group 1), a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts (group 2) and a control group that followed a healthy diet with strong advice to reduce dietary fat (group 3).
