Abstract
Introduction Currently, decisions about breast cancer treatment are primarily based on prognosis. However, long-term outcomes such as pain or fatigue are also important in deciding on treatment options. A patients-like-me (PLM) dashboard incorporating clinical and patient reported outcomes informs patients on personalised outcomes from patients with similar personal and tumour characteristics. A pilot evaluation was conducted to assess initial experiences, including perceived usefulness and satisfaction in supporting SDM.
Methods In-depth duo interviews with patients (n=10) and clinicians (n=5) were performed following usage of the dashboard during a consultation. Additionally 12 interviews with clinicians were conducted about perceived barriers and facilitators. Interviews were transcribed (verbatim) and analyzed using thematic content analysis.
Results Both patients and clinicians indicated that the dashboard was understandable, accessible, and supportive during consultations and experienced added value for SDM. Patients were positive about the range of PROMs outcomes included and the visualisation. Clinicians struggled with available time and amount of information provided. Recommendations for optimization included the reduction of the amount of information presented.
Discussion The PLM dashboard can facilitate the integration of outcome data in supporting patients and clinicians in SDM on treatment decisions. Before implementation clinicians should be trained in using the dashboard; in example by supporting patients in agenda setting for the consultation based on the PLM dashboard. Furthermore it should be explored if clinicians or nurse practitioners should discuss the dashboard with the patient.
Conclusions Study results showed that PLM dashboard was evaluated positively in supporting SDM.
