Hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) contribute substantially to the burden of COPD, both for the individual patient and for society, not least with regard to health-related quality of life and mortality.1 Evidence-based measures to reduce admissions for COPD would therefore yield important benefits, with regard to morbidity, mortality and economic burden.
