A short interpregnancy interval (IPI) of 6 months or less is associated with extreme and moderate preterm birth, low birth weight, stillbirth and early neonatal death.1 The availability of contraception to avoid unwanted pregnancies and promote optimal IPI is a proposed strategy to reduce the rate of preterm birth.2 However, other independent maternal risk factors for preterm birth may also be risk factors for short IPI.3
