QUESTION

In patients with newly diagnosed venous thromboembolism (VTE), what is the risk of previously undiagnosed cancer being detected in the next year?

REVIEW SCOPE

Included studies reported the incidence of newly diagnosed cancers in adults with newly diagnosed VTE. Outcomes were the detection of a previously undiagnosed cancer within 1 and 12 months after the diagnosis of VTE.*

REVIEW METHODS

Medline and EMBASE/Excerpta Medica (to Nov 2007); Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials and Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (Issue 4, 2007); journals; conference proceedings; and references were searched for cohort studies or randomised controlled trials. 34 studies (n = 9516) met the selection criteria. 3286 patients had unprovoked (or idiopathic) VTE, 3297 had provoked (or secondary) VTE, and 2933 had unspecified VTE.
