Study selection and assessment: randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that were published in English language, peer reviewed journals; enrolled adults with a diagnosis of primary insomnia; included ⩾1 cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) intervention; included ⩾1 of 5 sleep outcomes; and reported data that were not markedly non-normal (ie, mean was larger than the standard deviation). 23 RCTs met the selection criteria.
