 QUESTION: In patients with asymptomatic mitral valve prolapse (MVP), what is the prognosis of the disease? Inception cohort followed for a median of 5.4 years. Olmsted County, Minnesota, USA. 833 patients (median age 47 y) with a first diagnosis of asymptomatic MVP, first suspected by auscultatory findings (n=557) or found incidentally (n=276), confirmed by echocardiography, who were residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, USA for ≥1 year before diagnosis.
