Q What is the contemporary procedure-related risk of spontaneous pregnancy loss after midtrimester amniocentesis?

METHODS
Design:
prospective cohort study with follow up to birth (First and Second Trimester Evaluation of Risk [FASTER] trial).
Setting:
15 centres in the US.
Patients:
35 003 women, mean 30 years of age, who were enrolled in a study of prenatal screening for Down syndrome, {had a viable singleton pregnancy at the time for amniocentesis (16 wk gestation)}*, and had complete pregnancy outcome information available (95% of study participants). 3096 women (8.8%) underwent midtrimester amniocentesis (offered to those with a positive screening result or on request); 31 907 women who did not have amniocentesis formed the control group.
