QUESTION

In patients with diabetes mellitus, do low glycaemic-index (GI) or low glycaemic-load (GL) diets improve glycaemic control?

REVIEW SCOPE

Included studies were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that compared a low GI or low GL diet with a higher GI or higher GL diet for ⩾4 weeks in patients with diabetes mellitus according to validated and specified criteria. The dietary intervention had to be explicit and supervised or documented.

Outcomes were glycaemic control (glycated haemoglobin [HbA1c] for studies >6 wks; fructosamine or glycated serum albumin [GSA] for studies ⩽6 wks) and adverse effects.
