QUESTION

What is the effectiveness of different types of psychological therapy in adults with depression?

REVIEW SCOPE

Included studies were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that directly compared different types of psychological therapies in adults with a depressive disorder or increased depressive symptoms. Only psychological therapies that had been evaluated in ⩾5 RCTs were included. Outcomes were depression symptom scores.

REVIEW METHODS

PubMed, PsycINFO, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (all to May 2007); 22 meta-analyses; and reference lists were searched for RCTs. 53 RCTs were included. 7 types of therapy were evaluated in ⩾5 RCTs: cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT, 38 RCTs, 56 comparisons), non-directive supportive therapy (21 RCTs, 31 comparisons), behavioural activation therapy (15 RCTs, 21 …
